Artists in Athens – City of Crisis
Edited by Heiner Legewie & Georg Eichinger
This publication was a part of a project by the social scientist Heiner Legewie and photographer Georg Eichinger about artists living and working in Athens during the economic crisis. It culminated in two exhibitions that took place in Athens and Berlin in 2017 and was made possible through support of the Baumgart Foundation in Munich, the Rosa-Luxemburg Foundation in Berlin, and the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens. Nik Karlsson contributed with the article Street Art and Urban Environments in Athens. |
"The Holobiont Research Project # 1: Nordic art and cultural interaction and collaboration in Athens, Greece"The first funded research of the Holobiont Project resulted in this report which looks at various aspects of Nordic artist and cultural collaboration and interaction in Athens. It is the result of many hours of great conversations in Athens and internationally. We consider the contemplations and insights that we present here to be valuable in understanding international artistic presences in Athens, Greece and beyond. The research is not conclusive in the sense of providing overarching answers or solutions, but rather it contains a series of critical thoughts and bits of information that we have ourselves found to be of importance and worth problematising.

North//South Convergence: The Holobiont Research Project # 2We were granted funding from the Nordic Culture Point in order to research art and culture in Athens during the timeframe around the 14th edition of documenta which will partially take place in Athens in 2017. The conclusions from this have lead us to start implementing practical interactions, visits and collaborations between international artists, cultural workers and academics and will be developed into a larger project in the near future.
